Where it came from
Checkmate #22 was published by DC Comics in March 2007 as part of the ongoing espionage-themed series written by Greg Rucka and Nunzio DeFilippis. This issue is a significant installment in the 'Checkmate' narrative, which reimagined the organization as a global United Nations-sanctioned agency tasked with monitoring superhuman activities. The series was praised for its political intrigue and grounded approach to the DC Universe, distancing itself from traditional superhero tropes to explore the moral complexities of intelligence gathering.
The interior art for this issue was primarily handled by Joe Bennett, whose kinetic and detailed style helped define the series' intense, high-stakes aesthetic. His work on this run was intended to convey the grittiness of international espionage, focusing on facial expressions and tactical positioning to reflect the internal tensions among the members of the Checkmate organization. The series as a whole remains a cult favorite among fans of modern DC political thrillers for its intricate plotting and character-driven focus.
