Where it came from
Checkmate #21 was published in 1989 as part of the DC Comics post-Crisis era, written by Paul Kupperberg with art by Steve Erwin and Al Vey. The series focused on a specialized task force operating under the United Nations, tasked with handling metahuman threats through espionage and covert operations. It emerged during a period when DC was exploring more grounded, politically charged narratives within the superhero genre, distancing the title from traditional caped crusader archetypes.
The creative team aimed to blend high-stakes spy thriller tropes with the established DC Universe, highlighting the moral ambiguity of a global organization acting in the shadows. By focusing on characters like Harry Stein and Amanda Waller, the series offered a cold-war aesthetic that stood in contrast to the more colorful, mythological themes of contemporary titles. While it was not a blockbuster success, it is remembered by collectors for its exploration of government oversight and tactical combat.
