Cheval Noir #42

Cheval Noir was a long-running anthology series published by Dark Horse Comics between 1989 and 1994, intended to bridge the gap between European bande dessinée and the American comic market. The series focused on bringing acclaimed international creators, such as Moebius and Enki Bilal, to an English-speaking audience, serving as a prestige venue for high-quality graphic storytelling that often transcended traditional superhero narratives.

Issue number 42, released in the early 1990s, reflects the editorial mission of curating eclectic, avant-garde, and visually striking short-form comics. Like other entries in the series, it utilized premium paper stocks and thoughtful design choices to emphasize the artistic merit of the contributing illustrators. While the series was highly regarded by critics for its cultural contribution to the medium, it ultimately concluded as the specialized market for translated anthologies shifted during the mid-nineties.
