Conan #10

Conan #10, titled The Dweller in the Dark, was published by Marvel Comics in 1971 as part of the initial run of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith's adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp fantasy hero. This issue arrived during a pivotal era for the comic industry, as creators began pushing the boundaries of fantasy storytelling beyond the standard superhero archetypes. The series served to solidify Conan as a mainstay of 1970s pop culture, bridging the gap between literary pulp fiction and the visual medium of serialized comics.

The artistic direction of this issue is largely defined by the work of Barry Windsor-Smith, whose intricate, fine-lined style was heavily influenced by the pre-Raphaelite painters and classic illustration traditions. His approach to the title character was noted for its departure from traditional hyper-muscular comic book tropes, favoring a more lean, athletic, and expressive depiction of the barbarian. Upon its release, the work was critically lauded for its sophisticated composition and atmospheric layouts, marking a transition toward a more mature and artistic sensibility in monthly comic book production.
