Where it came from
Conan #11, published by Marvel Comics in 1971, arrived during the initial surge of the sword-and-sorcery craze that defined the era's comic landscape. Written by Roy Thomas with iconic interior art by Barry Windsor-Smith, the issue continued the series' mission to adapt Robert E. Howard’s pulp stories into a complex, visually arresting monthly medium. This specific period of the run is frequently cited by critics and fans alike as a formative moment for fantasy comics, effectively bridging the gap between traditional superhero narratives and gritty, literary prose.
The design and aesthetic of this issue were heavily influenced by Windsor-Smith’s evolving style, which moved away from the standard superhero template toward intricate, Pre-Raphaelite-inspired illustrations. The creative team aimed for a more visceral and atmospheric reading experience, utilizing dynamic layouts to emphasize the brutality and scale of Conan’s world. Upon its release, the issue was lauded for its artistic ambition, cementing the series' reputation as a critical and commercial pillar for Marvel during the 1970s.
