Where it came from
Conan number 45, published by Marvel Comics in December 1974, serves as a significant chapter in the long-running adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp fantasy hero. Written by Roy Thomas with iconic interior artwork by John Buscema and inks by Ernie Chan, the issue continues the creative momentum established during Marvel’s revitalization of the character in the early 1970s. The story reflects the gritty, sword-and-sorcery aesthetic that defined the bronze age of comics, positioning Conan as a complex wanderer in a world of high stakes and visceral conflict.
The design and visual narrative of this issue exemplify the synergistic partnership between Thomas and Buscema, who were instrumental in shaping the visual language of the Cimmerian for a new generation of readers. The cover, featuring dynamic action typical of the period, highlights the muscular, cinematic style that Buscema brought to the series. At the time of its release, the title was a cornerstone of Marvel’s non-superhero output, praised for its faithful adherence to the tone of the original stories while successfully transitioning Howard's prose into the monthly sequential format.
