Where it came from
Dark Horse Presents #42 was published in July 1990 as part of Dark Horse Comics' flagship anthology series. The title served as a cornerstone of the publisher's strategy to foster creator-owned projects and experimental storytelling, providing a platform for both established legends and emerging talent to explore mature themes outside of the mainstream superhero mold.
This specific issue is notable for its involvement of industry figures such as Frank Miller and other contributors who helped define the dark, gritty aesthetic of the early 1990s indie scene. The design and narrative direction were centered on the publisher's commitment to diverse, high-quality black-and-white art, and the series was widely received by critics as a vital counterpoint to the commercial trends of the era, cementing its reputation as an incubator for iconic independent comics.
