Where it came from
Dark Horse Presents #45 was published in October 1990 as part of Dark Horse Comics' flagship anthology series. The title served as a cornerstone of the publisher's output during the late 1980s and early 1990s, functioning as a platform for both established creators and independent talent to showcase experimental, mature-themed, or off-beat stories outside of the traditional superhero mold.
The issue is notable for its inclusion of various serials that were hallmark features of the anthology, such as The Mask, created by Mike Richardson and illustrated by Mark Badger at the time. The design aesthetic of the series consistently emphasized high-quality black-and-white printing and cover art that leaned into the grit and kinetic energy of the era's alternative comic scene, receiving generally positive reception for its commitment to diverse storytelling and creative freedom.
