Dark Horse Presents #48

Dark Horse Presents was launched in 1986 as an anthology series designed to showcase both established industry talent and emerging independent voices. Issue number 48, released in 1991, epitomized this mission by providing a platform for diverse genres, ranging from gritty crime noir to experimental science fiction. As a monthly publication, the title was instrumental in establishing Dark Horse Comics as a major player in the creator-owned movement, offering artists and writers the editorial freedom that was often unavailable at larger, traditional publishing houses.

The aesthetic of issue 48 aligns with the late-era Golden Age of the anthology, characterized by high-contrast ink work and experimental layout styles common in early nineties independent comics. The issue serves as a snapshot of the creative experimentation fostered by Dark Horse during that period, reflecting a design ethos that prioritized narrative variety over a single unifying brand identity. It remains a notable entry for its inclusion of mid-series story arcs that helped define the publisher's reputation for unconventional, high-quality storytelling.
