Where it came from
DAVID #1 was published in 1991 by Fantagraphics Books, emerging from the burgeoning alternative comics scene of the early nineties. Created by David Chelsea, the series is noted for its experimental narrative style and the author's meticulous, often self-referential approach to the medium of sequential art.
The design of the issue reflects Chelsea's distinctive illustration aesthetic, which often features complex perspective work and a clean, precise line. Upon its release, the work was recognized by critics for its unique blend of personal reflection and formal invention, helping to solidify Chelsea's reputation as a distinct voice within independent comics publishing.
