Where it came from
David #2 is part of the experimental and surrealist comic book series David, written and illustrated by David Chelsea. Published in the late 1980s, the series is renowned for its unconventional approach to graphic storytelling, specifically its focus on complex visual puzzles, recursive narrative structures, and meta-textual experimentation that pushes the boundaries of the medium.
The design and execution of these issues reflect Chelsea's interest in challenging the reader's perception of space and time on the printed page. By utilizing intricate layouts and perspective-bending techniques, the work serves as a technical showcase for Chelsea's draftsmanship. Within the underground comics community of the time, the series gained a reputation as a sophisticated, albeit niche, pursuit for those interested in the formalist possibilities of comics.
