DC Comics Presents #17

DC Comics Presents #17, published in January 1980, arrived during a period when DC was utilizing its anthology series to experiment with team-up pairings that deviated from the standard Superman and Justice League conventions. Edited by Julius Schwartz, the issue was designed to expand the narrative reach of the Superman-centric series by featuring unexpected collaborations, in this case, pairing the Man of Steel with the metal-men known as the Metal Men.

The issue features cover art by Ross Andru and Dick Giordano, with interior writing by Gerry Conway and pencils by Jose Delbo. The narrative follows the established visual language of the late Bronze Age of comics, focusing on high-concept sci-fi threats meant to test the synergy between Superman’s raw power and the unique, personality-driven abilities of Will Magnus's robotic creations. It remains a representative example of the era's focus on character-driven crossovers intended to boost the visibility of supporting titles.
