Where it came from
DC Comics Presents #21 was published in May 1980 as part of DC's long-running team-up series, which aimed to pair Superman with various heroes from across the DC Universe. This issue features a narrative collaboration between Superman and the Metal Men, written by Len Wein and illustrated by Jim Starlin, whose distinct visual style brought a moody, cosmic sensibility to the character dynamics.
The issue is historically noted for its integration of the Metal Men, a group of sentient androids created by William 'Will' Magnus. By the time this issue was released, the series was firmly established as a sandbox for experimental pairings, allowing creators to explore how Superman’s moral rigidity contrasted with the more chaotic or eccentric personalities of secondary characters like the Metal Men.
