Where it came from
Published in July 1982, DC Comics Presents #47 marked a significant crossover event during the Bronze Age of comic books. The series was designed to showcase team-ups between Superman and various members of the DC Universe, often serving as a testing ground for lesser-known characters or experimental narrative pairings. This specific issue features a collaboration between Superman and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, serving as the first appearance of the iconic Mattel toy franchise within the DC Comics continuity.
The story was written by Paul Kupperberg and illustrated by Curt Swan, a definitive artist for the Superman mythos. The narrative was crafted to bridge the gap between DC’s established superhero aesthetic and the sword-and-sorcery elements of the Eternia mythos. Upon its release, the issue was met with curiosity from readers, effectively functioning as a cross-promotional tool to integrate the popular Masters of the Universe line into the broader DC mythos, eventually setting a precedent for subsequent toy-based comic adaptations.
