Where it came from
DC Comics Presents #48, published in August 1982, arrived during a period when DC was utilizing its 'DC Comics Presents' series to foster unlikely team-ups between Superman and the broader DC Universe. This specific issue is historically notable for featuring the first meeting between Superman and Captain Thunder, a version of the character now widely recognized as Shazam, within the post-Crisis transition era. The story serves as a classic example of the lighthearted yet action-oriented crossover format that defined the title.
The issue was written by Roy Thomas with cover art and interior illustration by Rich Buckler and Romeo Tanghal. Buckler, a prolific artist known for his dynamic style, aimed to emphasize the visual contrast between the Man of Steel and the magical potency of Captain Thunder. Upon its release, the issue was received as a straightforward, entertaining superhero team-up, characteristic of the Bronze Age approach to continuity, where internal logic took precedence over the sprawling multiversal complexities that would follow in later decades.
