DC Comics Presents #81

DC Comics Presents #81, published in May 1985, belongs to a long-running series that frequently featured team-ups between Superman and various members of the DC Universe. This specific issue was written by Elliot S! Maggin with artwork by Curt Swan and Dave Hunt. It represents a period in mid-1980s DC history where the editorial focus was transitioning toward the massive continuity shifts seen in the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths, maintaining the traditional, character-driven storytelling style that defined the era.

The issue is particularly notable for featuring a team-up between Superman and the Martian Manhunter, centered around the villainous Vandal Savage. Curt Swan, often considered the definitive Superman artist of his generation, provides the classic visual aesthetic that anchors the issue. The story explores themes of longevity and the challenges faced by powerful alien figures, a common thematic element in Maggin’s writing, which was generally well-regarded by fans of the Bronze Age DC titles for its grounded approach to super-powered characters.
