Where it came from
Dent d'ours, or Bear's Tooth, is a historical fiction graphic novel series written by Yann Le Pennetier and illustrated by Alain Henriet, first published by Dupuis in 2013. The third volume, subtitled Hanna, continues the intricate narrative set during the Second World War, focusing on the interwoven lives of three childhood friends—a Jew, a German, and a Pole—whose paths diverge as the conflict intensifies. The series is celebrated for its meticulous attention to period-accurate aviation detail and its complex exploration of identity and morality against the backdrop of Nazi Germany and the Allied war effort.
Alain Henriet’s artwork is noted for its cinematic scope and technical precision, particularly regarding the depiction of historical aircraft like the Messerschmitt Me 262. The design philosophy of the series aims to blend gritty historical realism with a deeply personal, humanistic drama. Upon its release, the series received critical praise for its ambitious scope and the collaborative synergy between the writers and illustrators, solidifying its place in contemporary Franco-Belgian bande dessinée as a significant work of historical suspense.
