Where it came from
Published in 1994, Detective Comics Annual #7 was part of the Elseworlds imprint, a line of DC Comics stories that explored what might have happened if familiar characters had existed in different time periods or alternative realities. This particular issue, titled 'Batman: Dark Allegiances,' was written and illustrated by Howard Chaykin, a veteran creator known for his sharp, cinematic visual style and penchant for historical pastiche.
The narrative reimagines Batman in the context of 1930s America, specifically drawing upon the political tension of the era leading up to World War II. Chaykin utilized the story to explore themes of isolationism and domestic fascism, grounding the caped crusader in a grit-heavy, noir-inspired aesthetic. Upon its release, the issue was noted for its departure from traditional continuity, focusing instead on period-accurate atmosphere and a stark, mature tone that diverged from the mainstream monthly titles.
