Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in 1995, Detective Comics Annual #8 serves as a pivotal installment in the Elseworlds imprint, a line dedicated to exploring iconic characters in alternate timelines or hypothetical scenarios. This specific issue, titled The Batman of Arkham, imagines a narrative where Bruce Wayne never dons the mantle of the bat, but instead serves as a physician attempting to treat the patients of Arkham Asylum.
The issue was written by Doug Moench with artwork by Bret Blevins. The creative team leaned into the gothic, psychological atmosphere inherent to the asylum, contrasting the traditional vigilante tropes of the Batman mythos with the clinical, often chilling setting of a psychiatric facility. The story was received as a somber character study, appreciated by readers for its departure from the standard action-oriented cape and cowl narrative to focus on the ethical dilemmas of the Victorian-era medical profession.
