Where it came from
Die tollsten Geschichten von Donald Duck – Sonderheft, often referred to as the DDSH, was launched by Ehapa Verlag in 1965 to provide German readers with a dedicated venue for classic Disney comic material. Issue #98, published in the mid-1970s, reflects the series' commitment to reprinting significant works by master artists like Carl Barks. These digests were essential in shaping the German comic landscape, offering a pocket-sized format that prioritized long-form storytelling over the shorter gag-based strips prevalent in other publications at the time.
The visual identity of this series is defined by the expressive, kinetic style of Carl Barks, whose work provided the core source material for the majority of these early issues. The design of the Sonderheft was utilitarian yet iconic, utilizing a consistent graphic layout that emphasized the internal narrative depth of Duckburg. By focusing on the rich world-building established by Barks, the series garnered a dedicated following, ultimately becoming a staple of German popular culture and a primary entry point for generations of readers into the Duck universe.
