Where it came from
D'Orc #1 debuted in 2004 as part of a satirical fantasy comic series published by Soleil Productions in France. Created by the writer Nicolas Mitric and artist Sylvain Guinebaud, the series was designed to subvert traditional high-fantasy tropes through a lens of dark, often irreverent humor. The narrative follows the life of a young orc named Poussin, placing the reader within the perspective of a creature typically relegated to the role of a faceless antagonist in standard heroic fiction.
The artistic direction sought to blend dynamic, manga-influenced character designs with the classic aesthetic of European fantasy adventure. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded for its visual energy and its ability to balance slapstick comedy with genuine world-building. It remains a notable entry in the mid-2000s surge of French independent fantasy comics that aimed to modernize the genre for a younger adult audience.
