D'Orc #3

D'Orc, a self-published series by cartoonist Joe Daly, emerged from the South African underground comics scene during the mid-2000s. The series reflects Daly's fascination with genre subversion, blending high-fantasy tropes with psychedelic sensibilities and a distinctly dry, existential humor. It is widely regarded as a foundational piece of his idiosyncratic body of work that eventually led to wider international acclaim.

Daly’s design approach for D'Orc is characterized by dense, intricate line work and a deliberate rejection of traditional narrative pacing. In the third issue, the stylistic influence of vintage Dungeons and Dragons modules and mid-century fantasy literature is evident. Critically, the series was received as a cult achievement in alternative comics, praised for its immersive world-building and the creator's commitment to a singular, unfiltered artistic vision.
