Dracula: Vlad the Impaler #1

Dracula: Vlad the Impaler #1 was published in 1993 by Topps Comics as part of a miniseries intended to bridge historical fact with the gothic lore surrounding the 15th-century Wallachian prince. The project emerged during a period in the early 1990s when publishers were exploring mature, darker interpretations of iconic literary figures, aiming to move beyond the traditional horror tropes of the character.

The comic was written by Roy Thomas, a veteran scribe known for his extensive work on adaptations, and featured art by Esteban Maroto. Maroto was specifically chosen for his distinct, fluid style, which sought to emphasize the gritty, brutal nature of Vlad’s historical military campaigns rather than a purely supernatural aesthetic. It was received as a respectful, if somber, historical reimagining that prioritized period detail over the sensationalism found in standard monster comics of the era.
