Where it came from
Dracula: Vlad the Impaler #2 was published by Topps Comics in 1993 as part of a three-issue prestige format limited series. This series was developed during a brief period in the early 1990s when Topps expanded into the comic book market, attempting to leverage both original intellectual properties and licensed characters to compete with established publishers.
The series was written by Roy Thomas, a veteran comic book writer known for his meticulous historical research, and illustrated by Esteban Maroto, an artist celebrated for his elegant, dark, and highly detailed fantasy aesthetic. The creative team aimed to blend the historical realities of Vlad III of Wallachia with the gothic horror tropes associated with the Dracula legend, resulting in a somber and visually sophisticated tone that was generally well-received by fans of both period-accurate historical fiction and horror comics.
