Where it came from
The Shinsō Sairokuban edition of Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken was published between 2020 and 2021 to coincide with the release of the 2020 anime adaptation. This premium format, known for its larger trim size and high-quality paper, was designed to revisit Riku Sanjo and Koji Inada’s classic manga, which originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1989 to 1996. The project sought to introduce a new generation to the epic tale of Dai while offering longtime fans a definitive, archival-quality way to experience the adventure.
The design of this issue, as with the rest of the 22-volume set, features striking new cover art by Koji Inada, who updated his style to match the modern aesthetic of the new animation. The series is celebrated for its ability to balance the charming, lighthearted tropes of the Dragon Quest video game series with a surprisingly dark and high-stakes narrative. Upon its release, this re-issue was well-received for preserving the original spirit of the work while enhancing the visual clarity of Inada’s dynamic action sequences.
