Where it came from
Published in 1999 as part of the Earth X limited series, this issue serves as a pivotal installment in a project conceived by artist Alex Ross and writer Jim Krueger. The series was designed as a bold re-imagining of the Marvel Universe, set in a dystopian future where humanity has gained superpowers through the exposure to the Terrigen Mists. The narrative structure was heavily influenced by Ross’s iconic painted aesthetic, which aimed to bring a grounded, cinematic realism to traditional superhero tropes.
The creative process for Earth X was centered on a deep exploration of Marvel continuity, weaving together disparate strands of lore into a singular, cohesive mythology. Ross and Krueger intended for the work to function as both a celebration and a deconstruction of decades of character development. Upon its release, the series was received with critical acclaim for its intricate world-building and its departure from the standard visual language of the late 1990s comic book industry.
