Where it came from
Earth X #X, released in 1999 as the final installment of the iconic Marvel Comics limited series, served as a coda to Alex Ross and Jim Krueger’s reimagining of the Marvel Universe. The series was born from an idea by Ross, who sought to apply his grounded, painterly aesthetic to the aging and evolution of classic superheroes in a dystopian future. The issue was designed to synthesize the grand, sweeping narrative threads established throughout the preceding chapters, focusing on the ultimate fate of the celestial beings and the human race.
The art and design were helmed by Alex Ross, whose approach moved away from traditional comic layouts toward a more cinematic, illustrative style that emphasized realism and high-stakes drama. Upon its debut, the series was received as a significant artistic achievement, praised for its complex world-building and the subversive, often melancholic way it handled legacy characters. This final issue solidified the series’ place as a seminal work in the 'alternate reality' canon, blending John Paul Leon’s gritty interior art with Ross’s iconic covers to provide a definitive sense of conclusion.
