EC Tortured Hearts #1

EC Comics introduced Tortured Hearts in the early 1950s as part of their aggressive expansion into the romance comic genre. Following the success of their established horror and science fiction titles, the publisher sought to capture the burgeoning market for mature, emotionally charged stories that departed from the traditional, sanitized tales favored by competitors at the time.

The series featured the signature grim irony and sharp, high-contrast illustration style that defined the EC house aesthetic under the guidance of editor Bill Gaines. While the title aimed to provide a darker, more realistic look at human relationships, it remained a relatively short-lived experiment within the company’s broader portfolio, ultimately meeting the same industry-wide challenges that led to the decline of the EC line during the mid-1950s.
