Where it came from
Epic Illustrated #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 1980 as a high-end, magazine-sized anthology designed to compete with the sophisticated European comics market, particularly the French magazine Metal Hurlant. Conceived under the editorial guidance of Archie Goodwin, the publication sought to provide a creative space for established and up-and-coming artists to explore mature themes and experimental visual storytelling that were often restricted by the standard color-coded requirements of traditional comic books.
The debut issue featured a diverse array of contributors, including Jim Starlin, Michael Kaluta, and Barry Windsor-Smith, reflecting a design ethos centered on high-fidelity printing and artistic freedom. The magazine was received as a bold departure for Marvel, marking a successful pivot toward the burgeoning mature-readers market and establishing a legacy as a venue for sophisticated fantasy and science fiction illustration that prioritized the artist's unique voice over serialized, character-driven continuity.
