Epic Illustrated #30

Epic Illustrated was launched by Marvel Comics in 1980 as a high-quality, magazine-sized anthology intended to provide a mature alternative to the standard comic book format. Positioned to compete with European science fiction and fantasy magazines like Heavy Metal, the series prioritized artistic freedom and complex, long-form storytelling. Issue number 30, released in June 1985, serves as a poignant example of the series during its later years, reflecting the editorial vision of Terry Austin and the broader mission to bridge the gap between graphic illustration and literary fantasy.

The design and content of this issue lean heavily into the stylized, atmospheric aesthetic that defined the magazine’s latter era. By allowing creators to work outside the restrictive Comics Code Authority, Epic Illustrated invited contributions from some of the most prominent illustrators and writers of the mid-eighties. Issue 30 continues this legacy, showcasing the visual experimentation that was the hallmark of the publication’s design philosophy, ultimately serving as a preserved snapshot of the era's avant-garde approach to speculative fiction and sequential art.
