Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser #2

Released in 1973 by DC Comics, this issue is part of a short-lived adaptation series bringing Fritz Leiber’s iconic sword-and-sorcery duo to the comic format. The series sought to capture the gritty, atmospheric urban fantasy of the Nehwon stories, which had been staples of the fantasy genre since the 1930s. This specific issue continues the adaptation of Leiber’s classic tales, serving as a bridge between the literary roots of the characters and the expanding mid-70s market for mature fantasy comics.

The creative team for this adaptation featured writer Denny O'Neil and artist Howard Chaykin. O'Neil, known for his work on socially conscious superhero narratives, worked to distill the complex, cynical rapport between the towering barbarian Fafhrd and the cunning thief Mouser into the visual rhythm of a comic book. Chaykin’s art was instrumental in defining a distinctively jagged, kinetic aesthetic for the duo, which was well-received by fans of the genre for breaking away from the idealized heroic archetypes prevalent in comics at the time.
