FemForce #86

FemForce number 86 was published in 1997 by AC Comics, a company founded by Bill Black that gained a niche reputation for producing comics centered on golden-age style heroines. This issue continues the long-running series that began in the mid-1980s, which was heavily inspired by the pulp adventures and comic book aesthetics of the 1940s and 1950s. The series is known for its blend of retro-pulp sensibilities with contemporary comic book production values, aiming to capture a specific demographic of fans who appreciated the archetypal, muscular heroines often overlooked in mainstream publishers of the era.

The artwork and creative direction for this period of the series generally reflect the house style established by Bill Black, who often acted as both writer and artist on the titles. The aesthetic focuses on dynamic, exaggerated poses and colorful, classic storytelling structures. While FemForce maintained a dedicated cult following and was influential within the independent comic scene, it generally operated outside the mainstream critical discourse of the late nineties, receiving attention primarily through direct-market comic shops and the dedicated fan conventions where AC Comics maintained a presence.
