Fire Emblem: Engage #7

Fire Emblem: Engage, released in 2023 for the Nintendo Switch, represents the seventeenth main entry in the long-running tactical role-playing series. Developed by Intelligent Systems, the game was designed to celebrate the franchise's history by incorporating a central 'Emblem' mechanic, allowing players to summon protagonists from previous titles. The aesthetic direction, led by illustrator Mika Pikazo, departed from the more grounded palettes of earlier entries in favor of a vibrant, high-contrast, and colorful art style intended to emphasize the game's heroic fantasy themes.

The reception of Fire Emblem: Engage was characterized by a divide between its mechanical innovation and its narrative tone. Critics praised the deep, refined turn-based combat systems and the strategic complexity provided by the Emblem rings, which many considered to be among the series' best. However, the story and character writing were frequently viewed as more lighthearted and formulaic compared to its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, leading to a polarizing reaction among long-term fans who preferred the darker, political focus of recent installments.
