Where it came from
Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri, known in English as Gate, originated as a light novel series written by Takumi Yanai. The second season of the anime adaptation, subtitled Jieitai Kare no Umi Nite, Kaku Tatakaeri, continued the story of a Japanese Self-Defense Force officer and his platoon navigating a portal to a fantasy world. This specific release represents the premiere volume of the second story arc, which shifts the narrative focus and expands upon the geopolitical tensions between modern-day Japan and the denizens of the 'Special Region.'
The animation for the series was produced by A-1 Pictures, a studio recognized for balancing intricate action sequences with character-driven fantasy elements. The design philosophy sought to maintain visual consistency with the light novel illustrations provided by Daisuke Izuka, aiming for a military-realism aesthetic when depicting weaponry and tactics against a backdrop of high fantasy. Upon its release, the second season was received as a polarizing but popular entry in the isekai genre, frequently discussed for its controversial political commentary and its specific portrayal of military technology in fantasy settings.
