Provenance

Where it came from

Released as part of the promotional and commemorative materials for the 2013 feature film Gekijōban - Mahō Shōjo Madoka☆Magica: [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari, this item represents the cinematic conclusion to the narrative arc established in the original 2011 television series. The film was produced by Studio Shaft under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo and Yukihiro Miyamoto, intending to subvert audience expectations regarding the magical girl genre while exploring complex themes of self-sacrifice and existential entrapment.

The aesthetic design and illustrative choices were heavily influenced by the distinct surrealism of Gekidan Inu Curry, the collaborative duo responsible for the series' unsettling 'witch barrier' sequences. The imagery associated with this release was crafted to reflect the film's shift toward darker, more psychological storytelling. Upon its debut, the project was critically lauded for its visual ambition and narrative daring, solidifying its place as a significant entry in modern Japanese animation history.
