Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance #17

Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance #17 was published by Marvel Comics in 1993, emerging during the peak of the 1990s dark anti-hero trend in mainstream comics. As part of the wider 'Midnight Sons' imprint, the series was designed to weave together the supernatural corners of the Marvel Universe. The narrative focuses on the complex relationship between Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch, capitalizing on the intense popularity of the Ghost Rider character during that decade.

The creative team for this issue featured writer Howard Mackie and artist Henry Martinez. Martinez’s aesthetic, characterized by the heavy-lined, high-contrast style typical of the early Image Comics era and mid-nineties Marvel, aimed to capture the gritty, occult atmosphere of the series. While the title was initially a sales success due to the novelty of the team-up, it faced critical scrutiny as the decade progressed, eventually becoming a representative artifact of the specific stylistic choices prevalent in 1990s comic book art and editorial direction.
