Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance #22

Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance #22 was published by Marvel Comics in May 1994, standing as a pivotal installment during the darker, supernatural era of the 1990s comic book market. This series served as a direct expansion of the Ghost Rider mythos, focusing on the complex, fractured relationship between brothers Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze as they grappled with the curse of the Spirit of Vengeance. It emerged from a period when Marvel was heavily leaning into grittier, horror-inflected narratives intended to resonate with an audience seeking more intense, visceral storytelling.

The creative direction of this issue was heavily influenced by the visual style popularized by the nineties 'grim and gritty' aesthetic, characterized by dynamic, angular artwork and shadows. While the series featured various creators over its run, this issue reflects the collaborative effort of an editorial team managing the sprawling Midnight Sons crossover event that dominated Marvel's supernatural titles at the time. The issue was received by fans of the era as a necessary piece of the larger puzzle in the ongoing struggle against demonic forces, cementing the status of the two lead characters as iconic figures in Marvel's occult lore.
