G.I. Gay #1, published in 1986 by Kitchen Sink Press, emerged as a notable example of underground comix satire. Created by artist and writer Howard Cruse, the work parodied the hyper-masculine, militaristic ethos of the popular G.I. Joe franchise by recontextualizing those archetypes within a queer narrative framework. The project was conceived as a commentary on the political and cultural climate of the 1980s, specifically targeting the rigid social expectations of the era.

Cruse utilized the familiar visual vocabulary of mid-century action figure branding and comic strips to subvert reader expectations. The issue was received as a provocative piece of counter-culture media, celebrated for its bold blend of political critique and humor.
