Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in October 1984, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #28 stands as a significant entry in the long-running series penned by Larry Hama. This issue continues the complex, character-driven military drama that defined Hama's tenure, which served to provide backstories and tactical depth to the Hasbro toy line characters. It was part of an era where licensed comics successfully bridged the gap between Saturday morning animation and serialized storytelling, capturing a dedicated readership through its grounding of fantastical military technology in realistic political tension.
The interior art was provided by Mike Vosburg, who utilized a grit and kinetic energy that complemented Hama's writing style. The cover, iconic for its striking composition, is credited to Ed Hannigan and Klaus Janson. The issue is widely recognized by collectors for the debut of the character Interrogator and for furthering the deep-seated rivalry between Snake Eyes and his nemesis. It remains a hallmark of 1980s collaborative licensed storytelling, celebrated for the way the creative team navigated the constraints of a toy-tie-in to produce a cohesive, enduring comic book mythology.
