Where it came from
Released by Marvel Comics in 1982, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #3 was part of the foundational series designed to support Hasbro's relaunch of the G.I. Joe toy line. Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter assigned the project to writer Larry Hama, who crafted a sophisticated, grounded narrative that emphasized military teamwork and individual character development rather than the standard superhero tropes of the era.
The issue features cover art by Herb Trimpe and interior work by artist Don Perlin. Hama’s approach—anchored by his own background as a combat veteran—was pivotal in establishing the deep lore and complex dynamics of the Joe team. The series was met with significant critical and commercial success, effectively transforming a licensed tie-in into a long-running cultural staple that defined the G.I. Joe universe for decades.
