Where it came from
Published in March 1986 by Marvel Comics, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #45 was part of the long-running series written by Larry Hama. During this era, Hama successfully balanced high-octane military action with deep character development, a hallmark of the title that set it apart from other licensed toy comics of the time. The narrative momentum of the series reached a significant point here as the internal dynamics and rivalries between the Joe team and Cobra continued to escalate.
The interior artwork for this issue was provided by Rod Whigham, a consistent contributor to the series whose clean, reliable style defined the visual identity of the Marvel G.I. Joe run. Whigham worked closely with Hama to ensure the tactical movements and character designs aligned with the established canon of the Hasbro toy line. The issue was well-received by fans for its focus on mission-driven storytelling and remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of 1980s comic book history.
