G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #71

Published by Marvel Comics in 1988, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #71 stands as a quintessential entry from the latter half of Larry Hama's legendary run on the series. Hama, who wrote the vast majority of the title, was instrumental in shaping the complex personalities and military mythos of the Joe team, moving far beyond the simple toy tie-in origins to build a deeply serialized narrative. By issue #71, the comic had established a reputation for its gritty, grounded character development and intricate tactical storytelling.

The interior art for this period was largely driven by artists like Ron Wagner, whose kinetic style helped maintain the momentum of the franchise during its peak popularity in the late eighties. The cover art and interior layouts were designed to satisfy an audience that had grown accustomed to Hama’s blend of political intrigue and high-stakes action. While the series was officially commissioned to promote Hasbro’s line of 3.75-inch action figures, the creative team managed to cultivate a dedicated readership that appreciated the sophisticated world-building, cementing the title as a significant artifact of eighties comic book culture.
