Where it came from
Released in early 1983, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #8 was part of the foundational run of the Marvel Comics series written by Larry Hama. Hama, who had been instrumental in developing the characters' personalities and backstories for Hasbro's toy line, used the comic to provide a narrative depth that the action figures alone could not convey. This issue continued the Cold War-inspired struggle between the G.I. Joe team and the terrorist organization Cobra, firmly establishing the serialized, military-adventure tone that would define the franchise for decades.
The interior art for this period was primarily handled by Herb Trimpe, a veteran comic artist known for his work on The Incredible Hulk. Trimpe’s style provided a gritty, grounded aesthetic that complemented Hama’s focus on tactical realism and character-driven drama. The series was met with significant success, serving as both a marketing tool for the toys and a critically regarded comic in its own right, credited with expanding the lore of the G.I. Joe universe far beyond the initial television advertisements.
