Gisèle Alain #2

Gisèle Alain, written and illustrated by Benoît Peeters and Emmanuel Lepage, first appeared in the early 1990s as a gentle, atmospheric mystery series. The story follows the titular character, a young woman living in a bustling, semi-anachronistic urban setting who acts as a private investigator of sorts, resolving small, often poignant dilemmas for the local residents. The series is celebrated for its warm, humanistic tone and meticulous ink work, which evokes a sense of nostalgic European charm.

The design of the series reflects a fusion of classic ligne claire influences and more painterly, textured shading typical of Lepage’s evolving style. Issue number two continues the episodic rhythm of the series, focusing on the quiet observational skills of its protagonist. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of character-driven bande dessinée for its deliberate pacing and its departure from high-octane thriller tropes, opting instead for a quiet reflection on urban life.
