Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandit #1

Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandit #1 was published in the mid-1990s as part of Kenichi Sonoda's broader expanded universe for his popular action-manga series, Gunsmith Cats. The series centers on the character Bean Bandit, a skilled getaway driver, and serves as a gritty, high-octane spin-off that captures Sonoda's signature aesthetic of precision-drawn firearms and fast-paced automotive chases. This specific issue reflects the era's transition toward translating niche Japanese manga for Western markets, capitalizing on the rising international interest in Japanese animation and comic styles during that decade.

The design and illustration were handled entirely by Kenichi Sonoda, whose work is renowned for its technical accuracy regarding car mechanics and weaponry. Sonoda sought to capture a cinematic, Western-inspired noir tone that bridged the gap between traditional manga tropes and the aesthetics of American heist films. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylish, self-contained thrill ride that successfully expanded the lore of the Gunsmith Cats world without requiring deep knowledge of the primary series, solidifying its place as a cult favorite among collectors of 1990s seinen manga.
