Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandit #4

Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandit is a high-octane spin-off series created by Kenichi Sonoda, emerging from the cult popularity of his original Gunsmith Cats manga. This four-issue miniseries was published in the late 1990s as a way to further explore the high-speed exploits of Bean Bandit, a courier with a penchant for custom cars and dangerous jobs. The series maintains the frantic energy and detailed mechanical illustrations that defined Sonoda's work, focusing heavily on his signature automotive obsession and kinetic action sequences.

Sonoda designed the series to showcase his mastery of dynamic, film-inspired pacing, often drawing direct visual inspiration from American car chase cinema. By stripping back the ensemble cast of the primary Gunsmith Cats series to focus on the titular character, he allowed the narrative to lean into a more focused, pulp-noir aesthetic. Upon its release, the work was well-received by fans of the 1990s manga boom, who lauded the intricate line work and the distinct, rugged personality imbued into both the characters and their vehicles.
