Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandit #6

Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandit was published in the mid-1990s as a spin-off of Kenichi Sonoda's immensely popular Gunsmith Cats manga. Set in the same universe, the series shifts the focus from the titular bounty hunters to the daring, high-speed exploits of the character Bean Bandit, a courier who operates out of a heavily modified 1970s Chevrolet Chevelle. The series was created to capitalize on Sonoda’s signature style, which emphasizes intricate mechanical detailing—specifically of firearms and classic automobiles—within a high-octane action framework.

The art and narrative for this issue reflect Sonoda's background as a character designer and illustrator for legendary anime titles. In this series, he leaned into the 'car-chase' aesthetic, drawing inspiration from 1970s American action cinema like Bullitt or The Blues Brothers. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans of the hardboiled crime genre and collectors of seinen manga, who praised the technical accuracy of the illustrations and the kinetic energy of the sequences, marking it as a quintessential example of the 1990s cult-classic manga boom.
