Hǎishòu zhī Zǐ #2

Hǎishòu zhī Zǐ, known internationally as Children of the Sea, is a celebrated manga series written and illustrated by Daisuke Igarashi. The series was serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly Ikki magazine between 2006 and 2011. Issue number 2 continues the narrative introduced in the debut volume, following the protagonist Ruka as she becomes increasingly entangled with Umi and Sora, two mysterious boys raised by dugongs. Igarashi’s work is renowned for its dense, detailed pen-work and atmospheric exploration of marine biology and existential philosophy.

The series emerged from Igarashi's long-standing interest in the relationship between humanity and the natural world, particularly the ocean. His artistic approach for this project was to capture the fluidity and immense scale of the sea, often utilizing intricate cross-hatching to render the water’s textures and light patterns. Upon its release, the manga was critically lauded for its visual complexity and its ability to bridge the gap between traditional shonen adventure tropes and high-concept lyrical storytelling, eventually earning the Excellence Prize at the 2009 Japan Media Arts Festival.
