Where it came from
Hǎishòu zhī Zǐ, known internationally as Children of the Sea, is a celebrated manga series written and illustrated by Daisuke Igarashi. The series began serialization in 2006 and was crafted as a metaphysical exploration of the ocean and human connection to the cosmos. Issue number 3 is a pivotal installment in this narrative, continuing Igarashi's signature style which blends intricate, dense line work with a deeply atmospheric and often surreal depiction of marine life.
The work was published by Shogakukan and garnered significant critical acclaim for its artistic ambition and philosophical depth. Igarashi aimed to visualize the inexplicable nature of the sea, utilizing long, detailed panels that emphasize the vastness of the water. Upon its release, the series was lauded for its departure from standard manga conventions, eventually earning the Excellence Award at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival and solidifying its place in contemporary seinen literature.
