Hanna-Barbera The Funky Phantom #7

The Funky Phantom comic book series was published by Gold Key Comics between 1971 and 1972, serving as a tie-in to the Hanna-Barbera animated series of the same name. The show itself premiered in 1971, drawing clear inspiration from the success of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, featuring a group of teenagers and a ghost—Jonathan Wellington 'Mudsy' Muddlemore—solving mysteries. The comics were released during a period when Hanna-Barbera was aggressively expanding its television properties into the print market to capitalize on the popularity of Saturday morning cartoons.

The artistic direction for these issues generally adhered to the house style of Gold Key, prioritizing accessibility for a younger audience while maintaining the likenesses established in the television character designs. Issue #7, like its predecessors, featured episodic mystery-adventure narratives typical of the genre. While the series did not achieve the lasting cultural footprint of Hanna-Barbera's flagship titles, it remains a notable example of the early 1970s cross-media merchandising strategy, appreciated today primarily by collectors of animation-related ephemera.
